The US and UK conducted further attacks on Houthi objectives in Yemen

According to the Pentagon, the United States and the United Kingdom have conducted four coordinated operations in which fighter planes have attacked 18 Houthi locations in Yemen.

Reports indicate that Russian oil is entering the United Kingdom through a refinery

Despite sanctions imposed due to the crisis in Ukraine, research indicates that the UK is still importing fuel made from Russian oil in the millions of barrels.

Products refined from Russian crude and supplied to the UK are made possible by a so-called "loophole" in the regulations of nations like India.

Critics argue that this undermines sanctions meant to restrict Russia's war financing, even though it is not illegal and does not infringe the UK's Russian oil restriction.

The British government has consistently disputed that any oil has been imported from Russia since 2022.

However, according to a representative, "rules of origin" set out by the international community state that crude oil is considered to have originated from the country that refines it for commercial purposes.

Global Witness, an advocacy organization, predicted in a separate study that the United Kingdom bought over 5.2 million barrels of refined petroleum products made from crude oil imported from Russia in 2023.

According to the group's research, one out of every twenty flights in the UK used jet fuel, which accounted for the majority of the imported fuel (4.6 million barrels).

Political trouble for UNRWA, a key UN organization that helps people in Gaza

Singaporean minister Iswaran has been charged in an uncommon corruption case

It is a rare occurrence that has stunned a nation that takes great pride in its impeccable governance that a cabinet minister in Singapore has been charged with corruption.

A volcanic explosion in Iceland has caused lava to seep into the town, causing houses

Two volcanic cracks opened up near the town of Grindavík in Iceland, and people set fire to their homes.

Volcanoes on the Reykjanes peninsula exploded early Sunday morning, sending lava into the fishing town.

"The worst case scenario" is what one expert called the eruption, and the whole town has been evacuated.

The lava is mostly contained by walls that were made after an eruption in December, but some of them have been broken through.

LAVA has blocked the main road into town.

Monday morning, Iceland's President Gudni Johannesson told everyone to "stand together and have compassion for those who cannot be in their homes" in a live broadcast Friday afternoon.

The December eruption in the Svartsengi volcanic system was preceded by strong earthquake waves. Walls were built around the volcano in the weeks that followed to keep the molten rock away from Grindavík, which is home to about 4,000 people.

Some of the walls had been broken, the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said. This let lava into the town, where it burned down homes and businesses.

PM Katrín Jakobsdóttir said that the government will meet on Monday to talk about how to help people who had to leave their homes find new places to live.

"Today is a black day for Grindavík and today is a black day for all of Iceland, but the sun will rise again," she mentioned.

"We'll handle this shock and anything else that comes our way together. We are praying for you and thinking about you.

It is now "emergency" in the country, which is the highest level of alert and means there is a chance of harm to people, towns, property, or the environment.

The eruption on Sunday was the fifth one to happen on the Reykjanes peninsula since 2021.

During the Taiwanese election, the ruling Kuomintang party has framed the issue as on

Rock music swelled, stage dancers twirled, and the audience went absolutely bonkers, waving thousands of Taiwan flags.

On Saturday, the Kuomintang (KMT) candidate for president in the upcoming 13 January election was the subject of a boisterous political gathering.

The host called out, "Give me a president!" through the microphone. "Hou You-ih!" the audience yelled out.

Jaw Shaw-kong, Mr. Hou's running mate, seized the microphone as Mr. Hou watched and began a scathing attack against the DPP, the ruling party.

How are they going to get there? The path leading to conflict!" he exclaimed, gesturing with his index finger. "The road that leads Taiwan into danger, the road that leads to uncertainty!"

The KMT is relying on the idea that Taiwanese voters will be forced to choose between war and peace with China as the election approaches this coming weekend.

China supports "peaceful reunification" but has not ruled out the use of force to seize Taiwan, the self-governed island that it claims as its own.

Known as "greyzone warfare," China's military posture around Taiwan has been steadily increased during the past eight years of pro-sovereignty DPP leadership.

While pledging to keep Taiwan on its current progressive trajectory, the DPP has retorted that they, too, seek stability and peace.

An ad featuring outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen and her party's presidential candidate, William Lai, motoring serenely on rural roads recently went viral. Mr. Lai, accompanied by his running companion Hsiao Bi-Khim, takes the wheel after she exits. "Drive better than me," adds Ms. Tsai.

However, not everyone believes he is up to the task.

Many of the KMT rallygoers interviewed by the BBC expressed greater worry about the economy and rising costs of living than about the area's reputation for hardline supporters. Relationships with China, however, were equally significant.

I never imagined war was possible, but now it's a real possibility, and it's terrifying. A 45-year-old service worker named Ms. Shi spoke up while accompanying her parents. She expressed her desire to return to peace with the KMT, saying that the DPP is too forceful.

We should take a page out of China's book when it comes to caring for its folks. Admire their well-developed infrastructure and high-speed rail networks. Not only that, but Chinese phones are top-notch. "We don't have that," a 58-year-old lady called Ms Tu remarked.

There are hundreds of thousands of "taishang" (businessmen) from Taiwan who rely on the mainland for their livelihood. A large number of taishang have long been loyal to the KMT.

The "deep blue" group within the blue-party KMT, which supports tight links with China, is still quite influential.

Many of them trace their ancestry back to the "1949 generation" that escaped China in the wake of Mao Zedong's communist takeover. Their emotional connections to the mainland are still quite strong.

However, maintaining a steady course has been more challenging for the KMT in recent years.

Remaining relevant to an electorate that is progressively distancing itself from the mainland is a challenge, even as it craves tight connections with China. Its decades-long rule in Taiwan has come to an end as it has been defeated by the DPP in recent elections.

According to polls, the majority of Taiwanese prefer the current situation, which does not include declaring independence or merging with the mainland, because they believe they have a distinct Taiwanese identity.

Reiterating that it is not "pro-China" but rather seeking warmer relations, the KMT has toned down its approach.

An ex-cop and "benshengren" from a local Taiwanese family, Mr. Hou is being fielded as its presidential candidate. He is considered a "light blue" moderate. Responding to Xi Jinping's reaffirmed promise of unification, Mr. Hou recently stated his intention to "forever protect Taiwan's democratic system" and liberties.

The fiery "deep blue" media figure known as Mr. Jaw, who has previously called for unification, recently stated that the systems in China and Taiwan were "too different" and assured supporters that he would not advocate for unification if elected vice president.

However, many still perceive the KMT as being reckless.

One thing that can turn off some people is how much it sounds like Chinese language.

"A choice between war and peace, prosperity or decline" was the message sent by senior Chinese official Song Tao in November, during their remarks on the matter. The DPP administration then went on to say that China was trying to sway Taiwan's voters in the storyline before the election because of this.

A "separatist" and "troublemaker" are words used by Beijing to describe Mr. Lai of the DPP, indicating the capital's unambiguous preferences.

The uncertainty surrounding the KMT government's ability to secure peace and placate Beijing is another potential threat.

The Kuomintang thinks it can get Beijing to pledge prudence and then actually follow through. As a non-resident scholar at Carnegie China, Ian Chong expressed his uncertainty about Beijing's readiness to commit to anything in light of China's stance on Hong Kong.

Perhaps Beijing will momentarily relax its stance if the KMT is elected. The ultimate goal, though, is to gain economic reliance on Taiwan or control of the island by force or intimidation.

Additionally, this poses an issue for the KMT down the road. The gap between the KMT's vision for Taiwan's relationship with China and the wishes of the people grows wider with each passing generation.

War and peace narrative is "the reflection of a party trying to reconcile two different sides of itself and trying to present a coherent argument to voters," according to Dr. Chong.

However, the KMT's party platform and the will of the people are inherently at odds with one another. They need to make a choice: are they the Chinese Nationalist Party or something else entirely? speaking about the Kuomintang's formal English name, he made the statement.

As additional captives are liberated, son says, 'We struggled to bring her back'

Bustlingnews.com has been informed by the son of 75-year-old hostage Ada Sagi that he intends to embrace her tightly and declare, "How hard we fought" for her release.

Two Thais and ten Israelis (including two girls and nine women) were abducted on the fifth day of the ceasefire, including Ada Sagi.

Noam Sagi, an Israeli-British national, was interviewed shortly after his mother and the others were transferred to the Red Cross on Tuesday evening.

"It really is a beautiful, amazing moment," he commented.

Noam and I first encountered at his north London residence two days subsequent to the abduction of his mother from her kibbutz in Nir Oz, which is in close proximity to the Israeli-Gazarian boundary. He showed us a Hamas-filmed video that depicted militants aroused on the grass in front of his mother's residence with her vehicle on fire.

He has since addressed members of parliament, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, rallies, diplomats, and the Red Cross in an effort to secure the release of his mother.

Ada, a native speaker of Arabic, had instructed others in the language prior to her abduction, in order to facilitate communication with their Palestinian neighbors.

Her son stated that she was a peace activist and a member of a community that "fought their entire lives for good neighborly relations." Ada was scheduled to celebrate her 75th birthday in London the week following her abduction.

Earlier, he told the bustlingnews.com that it was tantamount to "psychological terror" to await word on whether or not she would be among those released.

"Each night, I anticipate a list as eagerly as a leaf." Do we stand? Have we left? "It has been an agonizing ordeal," he declared, comparing the situation to "Russian roulette for the heart."

While some individuals tore down posters depicting those abducted from walls in the United Kingdom, Noam conversed with lampposts bearing photographs of his mother.

Five Argentinian-Israelis, including Clara Merman, Gabriela Leimberg, and her daughter Mia, were reportedly sheltering in their safe room, according to a text message exchanged between one of the group's daughters and her father.

Noralin "Nataly" Babadilla, age 60, was in Kibbutz Nirim to observe the 70th anniversary of the community. The murder of her spouse occurred. Exo, her younger brother, stated on the Bring Them Home website that her final words to him were "I'm trembling; it's possible I won't return."

Following an incursion by Hamas, which has threatened to execute hostages

In retribution for a brutal invasion by Hamas militants, Israel boosted bombings on Gaza and cut it off from food, fuel, and other supplies Monday, bringing the war's death toll to nearly 1,600 on both sides. Hamas also escalated the battle, threatening to execute captured Israelis if strikes on civilians occurred without notice.

On the third day of the battle, Israel was still uncovering fatalities from Hamas' spectacular weekend raid on southern Israeli communities. After a long hostage crisis with terrorists, rescue teams discovered 100 bodies in the tiny rural village of Be'eri - roughly 10% of its population. Tens of thousands fled their homes in Gaza as airstrikes devastated buildings.

The Israeli military said it had largely regained control of the south after the onslaught caught its renowned military and intelligence infrastructure completely off guard, resulting in deadly street clashes for the first time in decades. Hamas and other terrorists in Gaza claim to be holding more than 130 captured Israeli troops and civilians.

To prevent future invasions, Israeli tanks and drones were sent to watch breaches in the Gaza border line. Thousands of Israelis were evacuated from more than a dozen villages near Gaza, and the military called up 300,000 reservists in a quick mobilization.

The efforts, combined with Israel's formal declaration of war on Hamas on Sunday, indicated that Israel was gradually going to the offensive against Hamas, predicting further devastation in the densely populated, impoverished Gaza Strip.

"We have only started striking Hamas," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in a nationally televised speech. "What we will do to our enemies in the coming days will reverberate with them for generations."

A big issue as the Israeli military moved closer to the border was whether it would launch a ground attack into the little Mediterranean coastal region. The most recent ground assault occurred in 2014.

According to the Israeli military, almost 900 individuals have already been slain in Israel. According to Gaza authorities, more than 680 individuals have been killed; Israel claims hundreds of Hamas fighters are among them. Thousands of people have been injured on both sides.

In reaction to Israel's airstrikes, Abu Obeida, the spokesman for Hamas' armed wing, threatened Monday night that the group will kill one Israeli civilian captive every time Israel bombs civilians in their homes in Gaza "without prior warning."

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen warned Hamas that "this war crime will not be forgiven." Netanyahu tasked a veteran military officer with overseeing the hostage and missing persons problem.

Israel and Hamas have had numerous skirmishes in recent years, frequently prompted by tensions over a holy site in Jerusalem. This time, the situation is potentially more explosive. Both parties have spoken of using violence to break the years-long Israeli-Palestinian deadlock created by the dormant peace process.

The death toll from Hamas's surprise weekend onslaught was unprecedented since the 1973 conflict with Egypt and Syria. This fueled calls to defeat Hamas at any cost, rather than continuing to try to contain it in Gaza. Israel is being led by its most right-wing administration in history, with ministers who vehemently oppose Palestinian statehood.

In turn, Hamas says it is prepared to fight a lengthy campaign to eliminate an Israeli occupation that it claims is no longer tolerable. Desperation has developed among Palestinians, many of whom see nothing to lose from Israel's perpetual dominance and escalating settlement depredations in the West Bank, the blockade of Gaza, and what they see to be the world's apathy.

Israeli counterattack is fierce in response to Hamas strikes.

On Monday, both sides launched attacks, resulting in much more carnage. A man with a crutch in one hand and an older son in the other joined evacuees being shepherded from a street after a rocket ripped out the front of a house in Israel's southern coastal city of Ashkelon.

In Gaza, Palestinians passed the bodies of the dead in the debris of the Jebaliya refugee camp through dense throngs of men.

The sound of explosions boomed over Jerusalem early Monday evening as a salvo of rockets fired from Gaza hit two neighborhoods, demonstrating Hamas's reach. According to Israeli media, seven people were injured.

After giving evacuation warnings, Israeli airplanes launched a heavy bombardment of Rimal, a residential and commercial sector in central Gaza City. The building housing the Palestinian Telecommunications Company's headquarters was demolished amid incessant bombings.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have destroyed 790 homes and badly damaged 5,330 others. Damage to three water and sanitation sites has resulted in the loss of services for 400,000 people.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared a "complete siege" on Gaza, threatening to shut off electricity and restrict the entry of food and fuel.

The Norwegian Refugee Council's secretary general, Jan Egeland, warned that Israel's siege would be a "utter disaster" for Gazans.

"There is no doubt that collective punishment is a violation of international law," he said to The Associated Press. "If and when it would lead to wounded children dying in hospitals because of lack of energy, electricity and supplies, it could amount to war crimes."

The Israeli blockade will force Gaza to rely almost solely on its border crossing into neighboring Egypt at Rafah, whose transport capabilities are lower than at other Israeli crossings.

An Egyptian military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press, said the Egyptian Red Crescent had transferred more than 2 tons of medical supplies to Gaza, and that attempts were underway to organize food and other deliveries.

Tens of thousands of Gaza residents have fled. According to the United Nations, more than 187,000 of Gaza's 2.3 million Palestinians have fled their homes, the highest number since Israel's air and ground offensive in 2014.

UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees, is sheltering over 137,000 people in schools around the region. 41,000 people have been taken in by families.

An Israeli bombardment on the southern Gaza city of Rafah early Monday killed 19 people, including women and children, according to Talat Barhoum, a doctor at the local Al-Najjar Hospital.

According to Israeli Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, hundreds of Hamas fighters have been buried beneath the debris of buildings destroyed by Israel in the last 48 hours. His assertions could not be verified.

New clashes on Israel's northern border on Monday raised fears that the conflict will move to a new front.

Palestinian militants from the Islamic Jihad group crossed into Israel, prompting Israeli bombing of southern Lebanon. Lebanon's Hezbollah terrorist group said five of its members were killed, and it reacted across the border with a barrage of rockets and mortars on two Israeli army outposts.

After breaching Israeli defenses with explosives before dawn Saturday, an estimated 1,000 Hamas terrorists went on a rampage for hours, killing murdered civilians and kidnapping individuals in cities, along highways, and at a desert techno music festival attended by thousands. According to the military, Palestinian militants have also launched around 4,400 rockets at Israel.

According to Hamas spokesman Abdel-Latif al-Qanoua, the group's members are still fighting beyond Gaza and have seized more Israelis as recently as Monday morning.

He stated that the group's goal is to free all Palestinian detainees held by Israel, which has previously agreed to imbalanced exchange arrangements in which it released huge numbers of prisoners in exchange for individual captives or even soldier remains.

Soldiers and civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, are among the hostages, who are predominantly Israelis but also include some citizens of other nations.

Since pushing out forces loyal to the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority in 2007, Hamas has administered Gaza unopposed, despite the blockade and four prior conflicts with Israel.

Meanwhile, Palestinians in the West Bank have entered the fourth day of tight movement restrictions. Israeli authorities have blocked checkpoints and closed crossings to the occupied territory, impeding transportation between cities and towns. Before the cyclone, India and Pakistan evacuated thousands of people

As some areas of India and Pakistan prepare for an unusually violent cyclone to strike on Thursday evening, tens of thousands have been evacuated.

A cyclone over the Arabian Sea named Biparjoy is expected to make landfall in the Gujarati city of Kutch in western India.

The storm is anticipated to threaten Karachi metropolis and the coast of Sindh province in Pakistan.

India has seen torrential rains and the deaths of seven persons.

Pilot didn't report anything unusual before the plane crashed in Nepal, an official c

According to a spokeswoman, the pilot of the airplane that crashed in Nepal did not notice "anything odd" as the aircraft neared the airport.

Anup Joshi reported that there was "no weather issue" and that the "mountains were clear and visibility was good." He also noted that there was a mild wind.

On Sunday's wrecked Yeti Airlines flight from Kathmandu to the tourist destination of Pokhara, there were 72 passengers and crew members on board.

It's thought that nobody survived.

As it reached the airport, the plane was captured on a mobile phone rolling sharply. Then, just over a kilometer from the airport, it crashed to the ground in the Seti River's valley.

The airport granted the pilot's request to switch from the designated runway 3 to runway 1, according to Mr. Joshi.

"We could use either of the runways to operate. The plane was given the all-clear to land "said the airport spokesman in Pokhara.

The incident taking place 15 days after the airport's official opening was "extremely regrettable," Joshi continued.

The accident is the nation's deadliest aviation disaster in the previous 30 years.

Prior to now, searchers claimed they had been given up on locating survivors.

According to Tek Bahadur, a local authority, there was "no prospect" of anyone being found alive. He added that the voice and flight data recorders of the aircraft have been located.

"So far, we have gathered 68 bodies. We are looking for four additional bodies "said Mr. Bahadur, the Taksi district's chief district official.

The government of Nepal established a panel to look into the disaster's causes, and the prime minister of that country designated Monday a national day of mourning.

When she saw the plane fall from the sky shortly after 11:00 am local time, local resident Divya Dhakal told the BBC that she immediately made her way to the disaster site (05:15 GMT).

"The crash site was already crowded when I arrived. The plane's flames were spewing out a lot of smoke. Helicopters quickly followed after that "She spoke.

She said, "The pilot did his utmost to avoid hitting any homes or civilization." Right next to the Seti River, there was a small area, and that's where the plane crashed.

The aircraft came down not far from the recently constructed Pokhara International Airport, which just recently began operations.

Short plane trips are a common way for Nepal's middle classes to tour the nation, and travelers at the airport told the BBC they still felt comfortable after today's news.

While waiting for her bags, Ria commented, "I'm not afraid of flying, but there should be stronger regulations and modern aircraft."

Just after 10:30 (04:45 GMT), a Yeti Airlines flight headed south from the Nepalese capital to the popular tourist destination of Pokhara.

There were four crew members and 68 passengers, at least 15 of whom were foreigners.

53 of the passengers were reportedly from Nepal. On the plane, there were two Koreans, five Russians, and five Indians. In addition, there was one traveler from each of Ireland, Australia, Argentina, and France.

Local resident Khum Bahadur Chhetri told Reuters that he watched the jet as it neared the airport from the roof of his house.

"I witnessed the wobbling, swaying plane, and then, all of a sudden, it nosedived and plummeted into the gorge," the witness continued.

Rescuers race to free Vietnamese boy trapped in shaft

Rescuers in Vietnam are trying to free a 10-year-old boy trapped deep inside a narrow shaft at a building site.

Reports say Ly Hao Nam was searching for scrap metal when he fell into the hollow concrete pile in southern Dong Thap province on New Year's Eve.

Teams have battled since then to free him, pumping oxygen into the 35m-deep support pillar to help him breathe.

He was heard crying for help two days ago but gave no response when a camera was lowered down the hole on Monday.

"We are trying our best. We cannot tell the boy's condition yet," one rescuer at the bridge construction site in the Mekong delta told AFP news agency.

Officials have been amazed that anyone could fall down the shaft in the pillar, which measures just 25cm (10in) in diameter.

Photos from the scene have shown the boy's parents watching anxiously as rescuers try to reach their son.

Emergency teams have tried to lift the pile with cranes and excavators, but so far with no success.

They have also softened the soil around the pillar to try to free it, but that has made it tilt and complicated rescue efforts, Reuters news agency reported.

Viking Orion: Cruise passengers stranded after fungus halts ship

Hundreds of passengers have been stranded on a cruise ship floating off Australian coast after a fungus was found growing on its hull.

The Viking Orion was reportedly denied permission to dock in Adelaide after authorities discovered a "marine growth" on the ship.

Australia's fisheries department said the fungus - which it called biofoul - was "potentially harmful".

Officials said the ship's hull must be cleared before entering the country.

Biofoul is an accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae, or small animal and can allow the importation of invasive species into non-native habitats.

The fisheries department said the management of fungus was a "common practice for all arriving international vessels" and said that the ship had to be cleaned to avoid "harmful marine organisms being transported" into Australian waters.

"Professional divers were engaged directly by the vessel line/agent to clean the hull while at anchor outside Australian waters," it added.

The ship was also reportedly denied permission to dock at Christchurch, Dunedin and Hobart. One passenger wrote on Twitter that over 800 guests remained onboard, many of whom were "upset and angry" by the company's "negligence".

The 14-deck, 930-person ship - which was built in 2018 - has reportedly dropped anchor around 17 miles (27km) off the coast while the cleaning occurs.

In a statement, operator Viking admitted that a "limited amount of standard marine growth" was being cleared from the ship's hull and said that this had caused the vessel to "miss several stops on this itinerary".

But it said that it expected to sail towards the city of Melbourne in the coming hours, where it would dock on 2 January. "Viking is working directly with guests on compensation for the impact to their voyage," it added.

In a letter on Friday, the ship's captain apologised that "the current cruise falls short of your expectations" and said a member of Viking's customer relations team would make an "adjusted offer of compensation" to guests in the coming days.

Guardian newspaper hit by suspected ransomware attack

The Guardian newspaper has come under a suspected ransomware attack.

It said there had been a "serious incident" affecting its IT systems in the last 24 hours, with disruption to "behind the scenes services".

The company said it was continuing to publish globally to its website - one of the most visited news sites in the world - and was "confident" it could still print the physical paper.

Staff have been told not to go into the office and to work from home.

In a statement, the Guardian said: "Our technology teams have been working to deal with all aspects of this incident, with the vast majority of our staff able to work from home as we did during the pandemic.

"We believe this to be a ransomware attack, but are continuing to consider all possibilities."

Ransomware is malicious software used by hackers - and often sent via attachments in emails - to gain access to an organisation's or individual's computer systems.

The criminals then find and encrypt important or sensitive files - and demand a ransom for them to be unlocked.

A huge range of targets - from schools and hospitals to government agencies and media organisations - have fallen victim to ransomware, with research indicating hackers are paid in the majority of cases, especially in the UK.

According to the Press Gazette, the Guardian is the ninth most-read news site in the world, with almost 390 million visits in November.

In its own reporting of the incident, the Guardian said online publishing was "largely unaffected".

It said Guardian Media Group chief executive Anna Bateson and editor-in-chief Katharine Viner had sent a message to the company's workforce.

"Thank you to everyone working hard throughout this incident to keep us publishing," they said.

"We will continue to keep our staff and anyone else affected informed.

"With a few key exceptions, we would like everyone to work from home for the remainder of the week unless we notify you otherwise."

Jake Moore, global cyber-security adviser at security software company ESET, said the Guardian being targeted was not a surprise.

"News organisations have become a regular target for cyber-attacks this year, and these attacks often have even more damaging effects on the companies targeted," he said.

"Ransomware can often bring all departments to a standstill, so it is fortunate that despite this attack the organisation will still see some key areas working as usual."

LadBaby: Food Aid is the UK's Christmas number one

Charity campaigners LadBaby have gained their fifth consecutive Christmas number one with Food Aid - a cover of Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas.

The song, which is raising money for UK food banks and the Band Aid trust, sold 65,000 copies to beat Wham's much-loved Last Christmas.

LadBaby, aka Mark and Roxanne Hoyle, now have more Christmas number one singles than any act in chart history.

"It's unbelievable, isn't it?" said Mark. "All we can say is thank you."

LadBaby made chart history last year when their collaboration with Ed Sheeran and Sir Elton John, Sausage Rolls For Everyone, became their fourth consecutive UK Christmas number one.

Now, with their fifth chart-topper, the Nottinghamshire couple have overtaken The Beatles as the act with the most Christmas number ones overall.

The Beatles had four in total: I Want To Hold Your Hand in 1963, I Feel Fine in 1964, Day Tripper in 1965 and Hello, Goodbye in 1967.

"A massive apology to The Beatles, and to all The Beatles' fans," said Mark. "I'm sorry! The charity wins."

Speaking to the BBC, he added: "If there was anything important enough to take a record from the Beatles, it was to shine a light on 14 million people who are struggling.

"I think it's an amazing moment [and] hopefully it gets everyone talking and gets everyone supporting food banks all year."

LadBaby's run started with 2018's We Built This City, a sausage-roll themed cover of Starship's soft rock classic. They followed it up with 2019's I Love Sausage Rolls and 2020's Don't Stop Me Eatin'.

Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company, said: "Securing one Christmas number one is a huge achievement in itself. To do it five times, in successive years, is unprecedented and frankly incredible."

Their latest cover featured money saving expert Martin Lewis, and a host of celebrity look-a-likes, including an "Adele", a "Paul McCartney" and a belligerent "Liam Gallagher".

The success means that Do They Know It's Christmas, originally written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to combat the Ethiopian famine, is the only song ever to top the charts with five different recordings.

In doing so, it breaks a tie with Unchained Melody, which has been taken to number one by Jimmy Young, the Righteous Brothers, Robson & Jerome and Gareth Gates.

Profits from Food Aid will be shared between the Trussell Trust food bank charity, and Band Aid's ongoing efforts to fight poverty and famine around the world.

Wham's Last Christmas, which was denied the number one spot by the original Band Aid single in 1984, again has to settle for being the chart's second-biggest song.

YouTube supergroup Sidemen, who had hoped to become the first drill act to top the festive chart, ended the week in third position.

Their track, Christmas Drillings, was also raising money to fight food poverty in the UK, and featured vocals from KSI and grime legend JME.

Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You came fourth, with Ed Sheeran and Elton John's Merry Christmas rounding off the Christmas top five.

The highest-charting non-Christmas single was Raye's kaleidoscopic club anthem Escapism, which landed at number six.

A political protest song about the Conservative government, the title of which is unprintable here, was a new entry at seven.

It was the fourth such song to make the Christmas charts for Essex comedian Andrew Liles, whose stage name is also unprintable on the BBC News site.

Meanwhile, the surprise new single by London rapper Central Cee, Let Go (a reworking of Let Her Go by Passenger) outsold dozens of Christmas perennials to enter the chart at 10.

In total, 28 of the Top 40 singles were Christmas classics, including Fairytale Of New York, Santa Baby and Feliz Navidad, as listeners continue to stream Christmas playlists in huge numbers.

Their stranglehold will continue in next week's chart, which will count streams from Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, after which streams tend to drop off dramatically.

In the album charts, Taylor Swift's eighth album Midnights regained the top spot, with Cliff Richard's Christmas With Cliff at number two.

LadBaby for 2023?
LadBaby refused to say whether they would make a sixth attempt on the charts next year.

But if they do, they could be within breathing distance of matching The X Factor's tally of seven Christmas number ones between 2005 and 2014.

The couple said they sympathised with accusations they'd ruined the Christmas charts, but felt the cost of living crisis was too important to ignore.

"We didn't want to come back this year but unfortunately the food banks are in emergency crisis," Roxanne told the BBC.

"We didn't want to turn our backs on so many people. We get messages every day from nurses, teachers, children and families who are struggling.

"You don't want music to become something people get annoyed with [but] that's why we did it."

"We want to do whatever we can at Christmas to support food banks," added her husband. "And if that isn't in the form of a song, it doesn't mean we won't show up somewhere else."

"Plans are always afoot. Don't rule us out. You think we can't sing? Wait until we go somewhere else and can't do that, too."

Donald Trump accused of multi-part conspiracy over 6 January attack

The congressional panel investigating last year's attack on the US Capitol has accused former President Donald Trump of a "multi-part conspiracy" to overturn his election defeat three months earlier.

The panel has released its final 845-page report on the attack.

It places the blame for the 6 January 2021 storming of Congress squarely on the former president.

It also recommends barring Mr Trump from public office in the future.

He did not co-operate with the panel and declared the final report a "witch hunt" after its release.

Over 18 months, the committee held 10 public hearings and interviewed more than 1,000 witnesses, including Trump administration officials and staff, Trump family members, Capitol police officers, rioters, militia members, and more.

On Monday, the panel of seven Democrats and two Republicans recommended the justice department investigate Mr Trump - who is mounting another White House campaign - for aiding an insurrection and three other federal crimes.

The Democratic chairman of the select committee, Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, wrote in a foreword to the eight-chapter report that it was once "unimaginable" that the president of the United States would incite a mob to march on the Capitol.

Here are the six key findings, which were released on Thursday night:

1) Trump made false claims which aides told him were untrue
The committee said that Mr Trump's decision to falsely declare victory on election night 2020 was "premeditated", and that only his lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, supported this action. The former president soon began making unfounded claims of widescale voter fraud, and continued to do so with more frequency after the election was called for Joe Biden.

The committee points to their interviews with several advisers and lawyers close to Mr Trump, who say they did not believe these claims of fraud or could find no evidence of the phenomenon.

Most notable among those voices was former Attorney General William Barr, who told the committee during a deposition: "I made it clear that I did not agree with the idea of saying the election was stolen and putting out this stuff, which I told the president was [expletive.]"

The president continued to sow election conspiracies over the coming weeks, though top Trump administration officials testified they informed him the claims were not true.

2) Trump's rhetoric brought rioters to Washington
The committee makes the argument that the attack on the Capitol was sparked by Mr Trump himself.

In addition to Mr Trump's repeated fraud claims, the committee points to a 19 December 2020 tweet, in which the former president wrote: "Big protest in DC on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!"

In depositions and court documents, rioters and militia members who were present at the Capitol that day cited Mr Trump's tweet as their rationale for coming to Washington. The committee cited men like Robert Morss, who was found guilty of assaulting officers during the Capitol breach. Mr Morss "believed January 6th stood for the moment when '1776 Will Commence Again' because President Trump asked them to 'Be there, Will be Wild'", the report states.

The committee also cites Secret Service warnings that people were planning to come to Washington on January 6 and threatening to "be wild".

3) Trump failed to act during the riot
The committee argues that Mr Trump did not take action as the January 6 attack commenced, and that he ignored warnings coming from Congress that a serious attack was unfolding.

Some of their conclusion rests on the testimony of former White House staffer Cassidy Hutchinson, who appeared in a dramatic hearing earlier this year and also gave depositions about the chaos she says she witnessed in the White House that day.

According to a transcript of her testimony released on Thursday, a former White House ethics lawyer had attempted to coach Ms Hutchinson before she gave evidence to the committee: "The less you remember, the better."

The committee also cites communications between lawmakers trapped in the Capitol and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, who was receiving an increasingly desperate barrage of pleas from members of Congress who were forced into hiding.

Texts from Hope Hicks, one of Mr Trump's most loyal aides, summed up the dismay among staff at the White House.

Ms Hicks texted Ivanka Trump's chief of staff, Julie Radford, after the riot saying "we all look like domestic terrorists now".

She also texted a White House lawyer: "I'm so upset. Everything we worked for wiped away."

4) Far-right groups planned - then acted
Tips about armed groups targeting Washington and even the Capitol specifically started coming in December 2020. The report notes that the FBI was sent messages circulating on groups run by the far-right Oath Keepers and Proud Boys.

"There is only one way. It is not signs. It's not rallies. It's [expletive] bullets," said one.

Capitol Police and Secret Service agents - who are responsible for protecting the president - received similar messages from insiders and others. Some specifically named the Capitol as a focus for potentially violent activity.

Some of the chatter came from private encrypted chat apps, but other messages were publicly visible on pro-Trump websites and Twitter.

Members of the far-right groups ended up among the crowds inside the Capitol on 6 January.

Alongside the report, the committee released dozens of raw transcripts of testimony provided by witnesses in closed-door sessions. Several of Mr Trump's biggest supporters on the far-right fringes - such as Alex Jones and white nationalist Nick Fuentes - refused to answer questions, citing their constitutional right to avoid self-incrimination.

But testimony from others - including Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio - indicated mutual suspicion, infighting, and conspiratorial thinking among the far-right factions involved in the riot.

Rhodes was convicted of seditious conspiracy and other charges last month and potentially faces decades in prison, while Mr Tarrio is currently on trial.

5) Trump tried to pressure his vice-president to overturn the results
Part of Mr Trump's plan to remain in office revolved around a controversial reading of the US Constitution, which he believed allowed Vice-President Mike Pence, who would preside over the election certification, to declare him the victor.

On 6 January, Mr Trump attempted to call Mr Pence, shouting at aides to get him on the phone, the report states. The former president then falsely told Mr Pence he had the power to intervene in the certification.

Witnesses told the committee that at one point, Mr Trump called the vice-president a "wimp" and said he was "not tough enough".

Addressing a crowd on 6 January, Mr Trump said he hoped Mr Pence would "do the right thing". Later, in the midst of the attack, rioters would chant "Hang Mike Pence" as they stormed the Capitol.

6) Trump should be barred from holding public office
The panel has made 11 recommendations as a result of its investigation.

One cites the constitution, which states an individual who has taken an oath to support the US Constitution but has "engaged in an insurrection" or given "aid or comfort to the enemies of the Constitution" can be disqualified from office.

Mr Trump was referred to the Department of Justice for assisting or aiding an insurrection.

Five decades after the journey that changed relations between Australia and China

In 1971, a young Australian scholar was enjoying a late-morning beverage in a bar in Canberra when he made a call that would forever alter his course of events.

Is there anyone here named Stephen FitzGerald ? the bar yelled.

Future prime minister Gough Whitlam, one of Australia's most influential politicians, was on the line.

Then-opposition leader Whitlam asked the China specialist if he would accompany him on a significant diplomatic mission to the nation.

Yes, of course I would, I replied. To the BBC, Dr. Fitzgerald said.

Then, in his typical wisdom, he asked, "Would you mind flying economy class?"

The establishment of diplomatic relations between Australia and China would begin at that time. On December 21, 1972—50 years ago—it accomplished it.

Deeply polarizing
issue Whitlam made a dangerous political choice by taking the trip.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which was vying for better relations with other countries and a seat at the UN at the height of the Cold War in 1971, was forcibly making its way onto the international stage.

Key players like the US, who refused to acknowledge the CCP as China's legitimate government, posed obstacles, nevertheless.

Australia was one of those countries. The topic of China remained "very controversial" there, according to Dr. Fitzgerald.

Just 3% of the population at the time was non-Australian or non-European, and many people were wary of other cultures. Another major concern was the communist "red threat". These concerns converged on China.

According to Dr. FitzGerald, when Australia's conservative government discussed the danger posed by the "downward thrust of China," it struck a chord with many people. It was simple to "imagine China, and not just China, but Chinese who were communist, taking over Australia."

"Even though it was not even remotely possible, it was a powerful statement,"

However, Mr. Whitlam had long pushed for Australia to establish diplomatic ties with China.

According to Dr. FitzGerald, it wasn't because of any ideological affinity for the CCP. You don't have to agree with them, but in his opinion, how can you not have diplomatic ties with the government of a large country?

However, even inside Mr. Whitlam's Labor Party, many believed that any move towards China would spell "political death" at home.

Therefore, Dr. FitzGerald explains, "it took guts on several fronts."

Dr. FitzGerald's journey to China was more of an accident than Mr. Whitlam's inadvertent ambassadorship.

He declined to pursue a study of China. From the moment he was given Chinese language classes on his first day as a foreign service cadet, everything started to spiral. Furthermore, Dr. FitzGerald had already left for a career in academia by the time Whitlam arrived.

The trip itself felt even more weird, since the invitation was a surprise.

There were no flights back then; you had to walk into China, according to Dr. Fitzgerald. We had to travel to Hong Kong, take a train to the border, carry our bags across, pass through customs and immigration on the Chinese side, and then board a different train.

For two weeks, the delegation visited businesses, factories, schools, and tourism attractions. Dr. FitzGerald remembers having to regularly enlighten "mystified" Chinese officials about Australian humor.

The meeting with Zhou Enlai, the then-premier of China, was the mission's true objective. It was never certain if that would occur until late one night when Chinese officials showed up at the Australians' hotel and started herding them into cars.

Zhou Enlai was there in the room when we entered the Great Hall of the People after driving through the deserted streets of Beijing, according to Dr. Fitzgerald.

Mr. Zhou startled the delegation by inviting journalists to remain in the room as the much awaited meeting got underway.

The meeting altered Australia's perception of China.

"The Chinese were demonized as a hybrid of red devils and yellow perils; they appeared to have horns virtually." And here was this incredibly refined and civilized, courteous, diplomatic, kind, and endearing individual.

"I came to the conclusion that our relations with China would never be the same again after watching that meeting between Whitlam and Zhou Enlai.

"At that point, the election in December 1972 was the only thing standing in the way of diplomatic relations."

The election was won by Mr. Whitlam, ending 23 years of conservative administration. He officially recognized the People's Republic of China on December 21 a few weeks later.

He appointed Dr. FitzGerald as Australia's first ambassador to China shortly after that. He was Australia's youngest ambassador ever at the age of 34.

Obviously, it was intimidating. It had to be, he claims. But I believe the thrill completely overcame that sense.

According to Dr. FitzGerald, Mr. Whitlam wanted Australia's relationship with China to be on par with its relationships with other major nations.

But things aren't like that now, 50 years later.


Although commerce between Australia and China has greatly benefited both countries, recent years have seen a historic low in bilateral relations. In the midst of disagreements over trade, human rights, and foreign intervention, high-level contact was halted for two years.

But in the past month, Australian Prime Minister Albanese, who was elected Anthony in May, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping for the first time since 2016.

Although there was no progress on crucial problems for Australia, he described the conversation as "warm" and "quite helpful." Few experts are hopeful that the relationship will change drastically any time soon.

There are still far too many areas of contention, Jennifer Hsu, a research researcher at Australia's Lowy Institute think tank, told the BBC at the time. She claims that many of them have their roots in "fundamental" differences like governing structures or moral standards.

"One meeting, or perhaps multiple meetings, won't be enough to resolve those difficulties."

Another such encounter will occur on Wednesday in Beijing when Penny Wong, the Australian foreign minister, meets Wang Yi, the Chinese equivalent. It is an Australian minister's first trip to the Chinese capital in more than three years.

Not everything was nice and light, but it did indicate that we were conversing with one another.
